New Year! Here's wishing everyone an awesome 2009!
holiday was a blur, like most of you, I'm sure — and went
by way too quickly. We followed up a great Christmas with an awesome
New Year's Eve with friends, and a belated Christmas celebration
in Mason City. And Emma definitely isn't letting us lose sight of
the next big milestone — her eighth birthday, on Jan. 16!
sure to visit our new January and updated
December pages for all the latest...
most of you are painfully aware, Winter made its entrance with a
bang this weekend. Between inches of sleet and ice, several inches
of snow, 35 mph winds, and windchills in the -30 degree range, we
spent most of the weekend at home.
there are fewer and fewer candies on their Advent calendars, the
girls keep reminding us that Christmas is just around the corner.
They are SO excited! …They've each told Santa what is on their
wish-lists (and their wishes have miraculously not changed for months),
and now the hard part for them is just waiting. :-)
hope you all have a happy and safe holiday, and are hoping for better
weather (and safer travels) over the next week.
sure to check out our updated December
page to see all of our holiday preparations.
Holidays from the Maifelds!
Troy and I are both still at Wells Fargo, with Troy having the
great opportunity to join a different technology team this year
We always like to travel, and got to visit San Diego and Disneyland
on our California trip in January, and Chicago in May
Emma is in second grade, and loves reading, writing and anything
Jenna is 4 ½ and likes reading, cooking, and playing
babies and dress-up
Both girls love their gymnastics classes and are lucky enough
to go to the same gym as Shawn Johnson — even watching
her prepare for the Olympics!
hope you have a great holiday season, and a blessed
Troy, Jami, Emma, Jenna & Joe
a great Halloween! The girls' kicked things off by trick-or-treating
in our neighborhood on Oct. 30. (Most of the towns in the Des Moines
area have Beggar's Night for trick-or-treating, the night before
Halloween.) Both girls had fun parties and activities at school
on Halloween, and we wrapped up the festivities on Halloween night
with our friends! The weather was awesome, too — hovering
around 70 degrees. We couldn't have asked for anything better!

a crazy weekend! Friday, Troy and I celebrated our 10th wedding
anniversary. We went out for a nice dinner, and the girls (very
happily) stayed home with their babysitter Emily... whom they absolutely
adore! At church on Saturday night, Emma got surprised when she
found out the kids got to sing in front of the congregation. She
was SO excited about that! And we spent most of today taking family
photos... and what a perfect day it was for that! It was a very
busy – but really great – weekend!
out the October page for updates...
Halloween already be around the corner? The girls already have their
costumes ready to go, and we've made our annual trek to the pumpkin
patch... so I suppose it is about time. We've been having such a
beautiful Fall that I'm not quite ready to be holed up inside for
five months. (Winter – and Christmas – can't get here
soon enough for the girls, however, who have been working on their
Christmas lists for months now. Ugh!) Hopefully, we'll have a little
more time, at least, before getting hit with our first 14"
snowfall. ...But, this is Iowa, so who knows? ;-)

a great Labor Day weekend! Between spending a fun day at Lake
Ahquabi State Park, listening to some great music by Fat
Tuesday and the Greasefire Horns at Snus
Hill Winery and Vinyard, and having a couple movie nights with
the girls, we had a lot of fun! (Well, we also spent a day cleaning
out the garage – which was pretty much the complete opposite
of fun – but we won't go into that now. Ha!)
Emma finished first grade, her amazing teacher, Mrs. Schnedler,
told the kids the end of the year was "bittersweet," which
she told them meant she was both happy and sad. She was happy for
the summer and for the kids to have grown ready for second grade,
but sad because she would miss them. What a great way to explain
it to the kids! Emma talks a lot about things being bittersweet.
…That's pretty much how I feel about Labor Day. It's great
that fall is around the corner (my favorite season!) and I love
seeing how excited the girls are about their new classes –
but I can't help but feel a little sad that summer is almost done…

July pages, and our new August
page, to see all that we've been up to, bittersweetness and all…
went to an awesome slumber party last night and (surprise, surprise)
didn't get much sleep. :-) So, we had a pretty quiet day, making
sure she got some rest. Then storms that went through this afternoon
put a damper on our plans for later today (pun, well, kind-of intended).
We spent the afternoon in the garage tye-dying shirts, which was
sure to visit the July page for updates…
had a great afternoon at Raccoon
River Park today. We went for a nature "treasure hunt"
on one of the trails, and played at the park and in the lake. Joe
got to go to the dog park and for a swim in the lake, too! (He was
very proud of himself when he found a dead fish in one of the trees
near the lake, and started to try to eat it. …We weren't quite
so proud of that! Ha!). It is also my birthday today, and was a
great way to spend a birthday afternoon!
Fourth of July and the Des Moines Arts Festival to swim and gymnastics
lessons – and a whole lot more – it's been a busy summer
for us so far! Emma even said today, "This summer has gone
A LOT faster than last summer!" …Very true! :-) Check
out the updated June and new July
pages for all the latest…
most of you reading this know first-hand, Mother Nature has dealt
Iowa a tough hand this Spring. On top of several tornadoes, seemingly
non-stop rain has created horrible flooding across the state. Especially
hard-hit is my hometown, Mason City, where record-breaking
flooding even closed the water treatment plant today. (Translation:
No water for the city for at least several days.) Please keep everyone
affected in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with clean-up
efforts over the next several weeks.
breaks in the rain, however, we've been spending a lot of time outside
with the girls. Emma finished first grade last week (I can't believe
the year is already done!), and with gymnastics, swim lessons, and
more, the girls have a lot of fun in store this summer! Be
sure to visit the updated May page or new
June page to see what we've been up to!
turned four today. I suppose every parent feels this way, but I
can't believe she's already four! She had a great birthday.
also just got back from a long weekend in Chicago. We hadn't all
been there since Jenna was a baby, so it was a fun trip. We had
a blast downtown, and also spent a day at the Brookfield Zoo.

love affair with our nephew/cousin Thomis continues! :-) We were
lucky enough to get to spend some more time with Thomis –
and his mommy and big sister, Brooklyn – today. He's such
a great baby! It's fun to see how much he's grown even in the past

had a quick, but fun, trip to Mason City this weekend to meet the
newest member of the family — our new nephew (and cousin)
Thomis James! He was born last Thursday, and is perfect in every
way. Even after being passed around, he was such a content little
also took the girls to see High School Musical on Tour,
at the Civic Center, a few weeks ago. It was part of Emma's birthday
present, and the girls had a great time.

Easter! We've spent the past week doing all kinds of fun stuff —
from egg hunts to coloring eggs to visiting the Easter Bunny and
more! The Easter Bunny even made it to our house in the snow flurries
we got last night (so much for Spring!), and we also had a fun Easter
was also Emma's Spring Break week, and she and Troy had fun at a
special camp-out late last week. They went horseback riding, did
archery, made smores… and did a lot of hiking.

brother Jake and sister-in-law Dana's first baby is due any day
now, and we had a great time at their baby shower last weekend!
Poor Dana is eight-months-pregnant-and-can't-breathe uncomfortable,
but hopefully the end is in sight for her! :-) It was a lot of fun
to see everyone. ...And I don't know who was crazier – the
three granddaughters (Emma, Brooklyn and Jenna), or my mom, Aunt
Cheryl and Mom's best friend, Susan! (My money's on the three bigger
